5 Important Properties of Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Alleviating symptoms of stress and enhancing feelings of peace, juniper berry’s calming scent was used for both spiritual and medicinal purposes in the past. Therapeutically, the oil supports detoxification and cleansing, particularly of issues with the skin, while boosting circulation and providing relief from pain. The oil also possesses astringent, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties. What do these properties actually do?

Astringents are compounds that shrink body tissue, which can be especially beneficial when it comes to skin issues, like acne or bug bites. Astringents do not stop at the skin, however. They support and strengthen muscles, hair, and even the intestines, protecting against loss of important bodily tissue. Juniper berry essential oil is a powerful astringent, which means it can fortify all of the above.

Antiseptics reduce the risk of infection when someone has open wounds, cuts, scrapes, or other injuries. Juniper berry essential oil possesses antiseptic properties, so it can support proper healing, without worry of infection.

Antioxidants combat free radicals—or oxidants—within the body, thereby enhancing overall health. While many oxidants are caused by environmental or external factors (i.e.: pollution, smoking, etc.), some oxidants are the direct result of normal reactions within the body, like aerobic respiration and inflammation. Whatever the case, the body requires antioxidants to destroy these free radicals so that they do not lead to disease. Essential oils, like juniper berry, provide the body with much needed antioxidants to combat free radicals and repair their damage.

Most bodily pain issues are caused by inflammation of some sort, either internal or external. Essential oils often provide the body with anti-inflammatory activity. Juniper berry is one of those oils. This oil comes in handy especially for inflammation of the respiratory tract and sore muscles and joints. Whether topical, aromatic, or internal, redness and irritation can be supported through any applicable essential oil applications.

Fungi can infect a person externally or internally and produce more fatalities than other types of infection. The nose, throat, and ears are most at risk for infection, and if left untreated, the issue can spread to the brain. Juniper berry essential oil fortifies the body’s natural defenses against fungi and the infections they cause, making this oil a superior combatant against foreign invaders.
